Welcome To The Club!
An Interview with Stan Gorman of The Pompey Club

The Pompey Club is an 18-hole championship golf course, restaurant, and event venue that rests amid the rolling hills of Pompey, New York. Established in 1962, it was designed by Hal Purdy of Kingston, NY. Discover Pompey editor Nancy Furdock sat down with Pompey Club owner and long-time Pompey resident Stan Gorman to learn more about this beautiful facility and why he chose Pompey to call home.
Beginnings
Stan has lived in Pompey for more than 32 years. It was The Pompey Club that brought him here. Originally from western Massachusetts, Stan moved to the area when his father was offered the opportunity to purchase The Pompey Club and asked Stan to join him as the Club’s golf pro. That was in 1991. Today, Stan and his wife Linda are sole owners of the Club.
Serendipity brought Linda and Stan together when Linda’s mom brought her to the Club for lessons in 1992. They married in 1996 with a reception, of course, at The Pompey Club. Together, they raised two children while Stan ran the club and Linda, also a flight attendant, previously acted as the Club’s event coordinator and continues to assist with special events and daily operations as needed.
It’s All About The Game
The Pompey Club is host to more than 400 members from all over Central New York, with a wide range of ages and member leagues. Average cost of membership is just over $1,500 a year, with no food and beverage minimums. Stan says he wants his members to eat and drink at his club because they want to, not because they have to. In addition, no sponsor is required for membership, members enjoy reciprocal privileges with nearly 30 other courses throughout the region, and discounts are offered to all military veterans and first responders.
The Pompey Club holds numerous private and public events throughout the year, and the restaurant and bar are open to the public seven days a week (in season). Reservations are always highly recommended, as the restaurant gets very busy at times. Friday night at The Club are popular with locals for their haddock and prime rib dinners, as well as their pasta dishes and other entrees.
When asked why golfers should consider joining The Club, Stan says, “Because it’s the best golfing value around. I would put The Pompey Club up against any golf course in the area. Our course condition is one of the best in Central New York.” Add to that the best scenic vistas in the region and great food and a welcoming atmosphere and you’ve got a winning combination that makes The Pompey Club stand out from the rest.
Giving Back
The Gormans are very much an integral part of the Pompey community, and they are particularly proud of the work they do hosting fundraisers and other events for charitable organizations, local groups, and the Fabius-Pompey school district. Just a few of the groups they support include fire and police fundraisers, Fabius-Pompey sports boosters, SPCA, Catholic Charities, and the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center.
In his “spare time,” Stan Gorman also serves on a number of community committees aimed at community/economic development and environmental conservation.
A Day In The Life
Throughout the summer, the Club employs between 50-60 seasonal staff in order to provide exceptional service for members. A handful of staff (including an office manager, event coordinator, and maintenance crew) work behind the scenes all winter long to prepare for the coming season.
Stan’s days start early during golf season. At 6 am, you may find him out working side-by-side with his “dirt crew” mowing and grooming the greens. Then, at any point during the day, he’ll jump between maintenance, kitchen, bar, pro shop, and office to ensure everything is running smoothly. “Every day is different,” says Stan. And that’s just the way he likes it.
Community is Key
When asked what he loves most about living in and doing business in Pompey, Stan didn’t miss a beat in his reply: “Community. Definitely. When I first moved here, a local family lost their house to a tragic fire. Next thing you know, there’s a crew of locals clearing the rubble. A short time later, there was a new house. How can you not love that?” Stan and Linda also feel fortunate that their children were able to grow up here, where old-fashioned values ensure that the neighborhood kids stay safe and there’s a close-knit community of support behind them.
The Future is Bright
Stan says The Pompey Club is constantly improving in small ways. The Gormans invest every year in updated equipment, carts, mowers, and clubhouse renovations. It’s a daunting (and expensive) task, but they’re up to the challenge, and there’s no slowing down, although they both hope to find a little more time to play some golf together while they continue planning for upgrades to the clubhouse and course. Their commitment is clear when you see the beautifully maintained property.
Open for the Season
The Pompey Club recently opened this year just in time to take advantage of a long run of gorgeous warm, sunny days. Stop in and check out the course and grab a round at the bar. And say hi to Stan while you’re at it — you’ll find him there somewhere, that’s for certain.
