Pompey Hill Fire District residents came out in possibly record numbers on December 12 to vote on a proposed $500,000 Bond Resolution seeking taxpayer funding to develop site plans and blueprints, etc. for a new firehouse for the District.
The resolution was voted down 114 to 46.
A public hearing was held last month on a proposed Bond Resolution seeking $13million in taxpayer funding for a new firehouse. After hearing multiple public objections to the lack of a needs assessment and detailed plans for the use of the funds, the Fire District then presented the $500,000 Bond Resolution without providing details or opening another public hearing. Taxpayers voted down that resolution during a limited voting window of two hours* on December 12.
Also on the ballot were one 5-year Commissioner term, won by Donald Kovalewski with 133 votes and a 2-year term won by Tim Chrysler with 108 to incumbent Sol Epstein’s 30 votes.
It is uncertain how the District will proceed with renovations and/or reconstruction of the firehouse, which most residents agree is in need of significant repair.
* Correction: The voting window was three hours — from 6 to 9pm.
